North of Mason Dixon

Hockey may be my true love, but a piece of my heart belongs to music. I love listening to music and going to concerts and even attempt to learn to play the acoustic guitar. Although I listen to all different types of music, country music is my absolute favorite! Earlier this year I had the opportunity to see a new band perform; this band happened to be AMAZING and also happened to be from Pittsburgh. May I present to you, North of Mason Dixon, otherwise known as NOMaD... more »

Welcome back

I'll start in the middle, since I am in the middle... of my life. Eleven years of chasing crime, sifting through lies from politicians and translating legalese from shady lawyers at the Detroit Free Press caught up with me this past spring. I finall… more »

Blogger Credentials- This Bloggers Perspective

I have been hearing a ton about bloggers wanting the rights to go into the places and report on the things that they write about in their blogs. I agree and yet I disagree with this idea. Why would someone want to give someone that isn't officially educa… more »

News from Wilkes Barre

As the hockey season inches closer everyone seems to search for any little piece of news related to hockey to fill the void that the offseason creates. Since my last post the Wilkes Barre Penguins have released enough news to keep that void pretty full. A new assistant coach has been hired, the new alternate jersey was unveiled, Pensfest took place, the preseason schedule was announced, and a date for the full schedule release has been made. more »

My Arron Asham Two Cents, Possible Penguin Lines, and Other Ramblings...

I saw the Arron Asham signing and thought the same thing everyone else did, what have we done?! Then I began to think of the things we were missing as a team and what he can provide. My mind changed instantly. I am going to look up possible line scenarios as well. more »

County Fair

Summer is not over until you attend a County Fair. It’s the end of August and the County by County Fairs are still going on. Bring a friend or the family for some good outdoors fun. Some fairs have Derbies, some have farm animals and some even have carni… more »

Steel City Outlaw Wins the "Superbowl" of Sprint Car Racing

Although you know me as the Wilkes Barre Penguins blogger on this site, I am also an avid dirt racing fan. Last night was the final race of the Knoxville Nationals, an annual 4 day racing event that is thought of as the equivalent of the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup Championship, or World Series. In other words...it's a big deal in the sprint car world. I am excited to announce that the winner of the event was Tim Shaffer, the Steel City Outlaw. more »

The Female Hockey Fan...

Throughout the time I have been a hockey fan I have noticed that female fans are treated differently by some male fans, by the media, and by the NHL organization. In the sports world, male and female hockey teams exist. There is even a team for both sexes in the Olympics. If men and women can both play hockey, why is there such a difference in treatment when it comes to being a hockey fan? Hockey is a sport that appeals to all different types of people for one reason or another. Why is it that when a female says she is a hockey fan she is automatically labeled a puck bunny and is not taken seriously? I have gotten to know quite a few female hockey fans and I can tell you that the majority of them show no resemblance to a puck bunny. more »

Busy Week in Pittsburgh!

Although there is no playoff implications or anything of that sort in the air right now, we did have some great things happen. We had a walk off 3 run shot from Pedro Alvarez, the new Consol Energy Center officially opened, Pitt and Penn State are in the top 15 in the country to start off the season, and the Steelers are looking pretty good (in my eyes) as well as our own Dick Lebeau being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Also, we have three new writers preparing their first posts as we speak! more »

Pittsburgh Week in Review

I was trying to think of what I wanted to do here, so I thought of the idea of a weekly review of what happened in the Pittsburgh sporting world and beyond. Considering it isn't hockey season-yet or football season-yet and our baseball team isn't that go… more »
